The best narratives rely on characters that change, sometimes for the worst but often for the better. Part of what makes the characters of the MCU feel alive is their ability to switch allegiances and relationships over time. People change, and your ally one day may not be your friend the next. I’m not saying that betrayals are a good thing, but they certainly force these heroes to grow and learn who to trust.
Heck, look at Loki. It took three movies for Thor to finally expect his brother will do the worst thing possible at any given moment. N’Jobu betraying Wakanda in search of a better way to use their resources is the country’s catalyst for change. Of course, there are also the pivots by Director Pierce and Director Hayward that keep the plot from relying too much on SHIELD and SWORD. Don’t even get me started on the wrinkle Civil War adds to the core Avengers’ team.
Of course, not every betrayal is focused on growing pains. Some of them just sting to discover. Watching The Ancient One draw on dark magic breeds a new villain for Strange to overcome. Obadiah taking advantage of the faith Tony puts in him still resonates to this day. Ultron using the Maximoff Twins and their country for his own personal gains is unforgivable. See, there are so many gut-wrenching moments.
