Directing movies is a difficult thing to do. You either find a ton of passion for a project you love only to get interference from the studio that hired you or you find yourself tied to a project you have no interest in, practically begging to be fired. Needless to say, Hollywood is filled with stories of directors having to be switched out during production for one problem or another. Some of these films are parts of the biggest franchises of all time!

Whether we’re talking about superhero films that needed new inspiration, space operas that were going nowhere at light speed or horror movies that the studio needed to turn into a franchise, when big money is in play, studios don’t worry about anyone’s feelings. While this can often destroy a director’s future, there are times when it does exactly the opposite. In a few cases, the director would go on to make almost the exact same movie they were fired from with incredible success. It almost warms your heart to see someone win for exactly the idea they were fired over.

The truly tragic cases are the ones where a studio will commit to a visionary director only to then punish them for the very vision they were hired for. In some of these cases it’s confusing as to what the studios even wanted.

So let’s dive right in! Here are some of the biggest movies that changed directors during production!
