Description

With Matthew Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman approaching its March 4th 2022 release date, it’s time to dig into the secrets of all the gadgets the Dark Knight is hiding in that bottomless utility belt. Yes, whether it’s batropes, grapple guns, batarangs, smoke capsules, gas pellets, explosives, tasers, and much much (MUCH) more, gadgets are part of what makes the Caped Crusader great, and why, even after Batmen like Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Kevin Conroy, and others, we still can’t wait for Robert Pattinson to don the batsuit.

But what’s really interesting about Batman’s gadgets is how they’ve evolved over time. At first, Batman was going to be just like The Shadow, carrying guns and killing his enemies. But thanks to early DC Comics editor Whit Ellsworth, the Dark Knight took a different route, and if the hero wasn’t going to carry guns, well, he’d need SOMETHING to subdue his targets, and thus the bat-gadgets were born.

Every different iteration of the character brings something new to the character’s inventory. Tim Burton’s films famously first introduced the grapple gun as we know it today. Christopher Nolan normalized the bat-glider and cape becoming one and the same. What will Matt Reeves’ film bring to Bruce Wayne’s arsenal? We’ve got some ideas, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
