Even though The Simpsons never age or rarely wear different outfits, the characters have gone through a lot of changes over the years -- and we’re talking about a lot more than just cleaned up animation or the 2009 conversion to HD. One of the most changed characters on The Simpsons may be Waylon Smithers. Mr. Burns' right-hand man started out the show with dark skin, quickly transformed into yellow, and we’ve only seen his personality shift in the process. He started out as a dedicated employee whose obsession with Burns has only grown over the years. Ned Flanders started out as Homer’s envious nightmare. He made more money than Homer, things always seemed to go his way, and the do-gooder pretty much got everything he wanted. Well, Ned’s life has definitely changed over time. He’s always been a church-loing man, but over the years, the character has become a one-note shell of his former self so much that TV Tropes made a whole category known as Flanderization. Ralph Wiggum started out as a simple student at Springfield elementary school who slowly transformed into one of the dumbest characters on the show. With a single digit IQ, he makes Homer and Barney look like geniuses.
Season one feels so long ago and many characters have changed over the years as writers dove deep into their personalities, developed them more on the screen, and in some cases they stripped them down into a shell of their former selves. See how one character changed races, how another completely changed personas, and how one threw their life in the gutter.
