A dashing historical drama decks the walls of Netflix every once in a while to reinvigorate audiences with a new dose of action, love and drama. In this regard, Barbarians, a modest but crisp six-episode series is not very different. And yet, Barbarians is also the first fictionalized depiction of an important moment in Germanic history on Television. It is also the flagbearer of Gaumont Germany's striking first catalogue of episodic productions, marking the European Entertainment mogul's decisive branch-out into local markets. Adding to the story's tenacity is a stellar main cast (Jeanne Goursaud, David Schütter and Laurence Rupp) and a cavalry of supporting artists, some of whom expertly deliver their lines in ancient Latin to do justice to the Roman Era. The story kicks off with a Roman gladiator making a voyage into the Germanic land which he originated from. He reunites with his kin and clan to slowly realize that the Roman legions his adoptive father commands are not helmed by the fairest empire in the world, using forces of intimidation and tyranny on the Germanic tribes. He is an important deliverer of their intention of expanding further into the European continent, but turns into a rebel and leader for his people when the need to defend their land arises. This culminates into an epic ambush at the Teutoburg Forest, resulting in an unprecedented and wildly victorious win for the Germanic people. This is where the season ends on a cliffhanger, but the events that succeeded it continued in real time. Barbarians is now streaming on Netflix with the looming promise of a second season.
