Marvel movies are some of the most popular and in demand productions around. Seemingly everyone wants a piece of this pie. But sometimes, an actor isn’t as ideal for the role as one initially believed. Whether it is for a reboot of the series or a recast during a franchise, sometimes a new face is needed to elevate the character to new heights.
For a non-MCU starter, let’s point out that the actor to play Sabertooth changed between the first X-Men movie and Origins: Wolverine, despite Hugh Jackman being a constant. We can all agree that Lief Schriber was a highlight in another so-so movie. Othertimes, it is due to creative differences. This is the reason we have Don Cheadle and Mark Ruffalo in the MCU as opposed to Terrence Howard and Ed Norton respectively.
Sometimes, an actor just doesn’t quite capture the spirit of the character. No matter how awesome Spider-Man 2 is with Tobery Maguire, there was something just different about that Peter Parker. Tom Holland though, captures the spirit of the character perfectly. Likewise, when it came time to cast Nick Fury in the MCU, they opted to cast the actor that inspired the reboot on the comicbook page, Samuel L. Jackson. The Howard Stark in the first Iron Man movie isn’t the same as the rest of the MCU and the guy who played Thanos in 2012’s Avengers isn’t Josh Brolin. And while the movie was mixed, Tom Hardy as Venom is way better than Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3.
Over on Netflix, both Jon Bernthal and Charlie Cox as Frank Castle and Daredevil respectively significantly improved on the characterization compared to the previous cinematic entries. We will miss these interpretations.
