Villains play some of the most important roles in stories. As Robert McKee wrote, “the more powerful and complex the forces of antagonism opposing the character, the more completely realized character and story must become.” And John Truby agreed: “The relationship between the hero and the opponent is the single most important relationship in the story. In working out the struggle between these two characters, the larger issues and themes of the story unfold.”
What they meant was - villains are important! A villain tests a protagonist to the limit, giving us the most complete and exciting version of their character arc by putting them under enormous pressure that they might never otherwise have experienced.
Cinema is full of great villains, from the pantomime horror of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939), to the terrifying anarchy of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008), to the surprisingly nuanced motivations of Ed Harris in the otherwise pretty un-nuanced The Rock (Michael Bay, 1996). Some villains are pure evil, unrepentant and gleeful in their destructive behavior - but some villains do reach a point in the story where they decide that maybe they’ve gone too far. Some decide to turn themselves in.
And some decide to sacrifice themselves - or their schemes - for the greater good, however they happen to define it.
In this video, we look at 10 villains who sacrificed themselves for the greater good.
