The Black Widow solo movie is nigh - but after that, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will begin, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introducing a new hero to the fray.
Created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, Shang-Chi first appeared in Special Marvel Edition Number 15 in December 1973. Since then, he has been established as one of Marvel’s pre-eminent martial arts superstars, a skilled and fearsome fighter trained from birth to become a living weapon. He will be played in the movie by skilled actor and stunt performer Simu Liu, and the film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by David Callaham. All things being well - let’s cross our fingers - the movie drops on September 3.
Shang-Chi joins his on-screen superhero comrades at a time of flux in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Old certainties have fallen away, legacy characters are either gone or have stepped back - the Avengers have been, to all intents and purposes, disassembled.
There is a vacuum, and it needs to be filled with new heroes, alongside established names like Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, who are still in their prime. Shang-Chi will be a strong addition to the MCU, and his introduction will also add a whole bunch of new interesting wrinkles to the shared continuity. In this video, we’re going to look at ten of the most exciting possibilities that Shang-Chi offers for change in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
