J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter is the definition of magical. And from Hogwarts to magical creatures to spells, the movie adaptations have it all. But of course creating magic on screen isn’t so simple, and not even CGI will cut it. That’s why the Harry Potter crew had to use practical effects like life-sized models of magical creatures, multiple stunt and body doubles, and elaborately prepared contraptions like broom-flying simulators to make the magic seem real on-set.

Behind the scenes photos can be both endearing--like when Harry, Ron, and Hermione have to say goodbye to each other--to downright uncomfortable--like when Voldemort, Dumbledore, Harry and Bellatrix all smile for a group photo.
