The magical world of Harry Potter is one chock full of action hijinks, most of which is accomplished by groundbreaking special effects — but don’t be fooled by these crafty illusions, ‘cause there’s plenty of physical stunt work that went into creating this landmark film saga, and a lot of it was insanely dangerous for those brave men and women pulling off those stunts. In this video we’ll be looking at some of the most dangerous, at least as far as what’s been told and leaked from the production. These range from the charming slap across Tom Felton’s face courtesy Emma Watson, to the more tragic — namely, the horrific accident that led Daniel Radcliffe stunt double David Holmes to becoming paralyzed following an incident on the set of Deathly Hallows Part I.
We’ll also dive into several instances of actors doing their own stunts, such as with Radcliffe falling down the roof of Hogwarts and risking drowning while performing another stunt for Goblet of Fire’s Tri-Wizard Tournament. The Weasleys get in on the action as well, with Fred and George actors Oliver and James Phelps lobbying unsuccessfully to perform their own stunt in a memorable gag from that same film. Unfortunately we don’t have much of anything for Ron Weasley actor Rupert Grint, who was too busy being dragged by Sirius Black while Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe were busy ducking and dodging the Whomping Willow in order to get the scene just right.
The stunts in Harry Potter are incredibly dangerous, and plentiful. Even the least likely sequences, in which CGI is a massive factor and the action is covered up by post-production, stunt work is utilized to make it happen.
