Like most creative formats, film has a wonderful capacity to tell stories from the whole breadth of human experience and beyond. From sprawling, utterly fantastical epic franchises like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe all of the way down to short films and the most grounded and dedicated character studies, like Dog Day Afternoon, Inside Llewelyn Davis, and Glengarry Glen Ross, film can tell a huge variety of stories across just as varied a set of scales. Today we are going to do something to celebrate one of those scales and that, of course, is films that take place in twenty-four hours or less.
The number of films that manage to tell their story in that condensed time frame is almost impossible to count, but over the next ten minutes we are going to look at fifteen of them and explore a little of how each of them uses their ticking clock to their advantage. From tense action spectacles like Die Hard and Gravity to dramas like Rope and Do the Right Thing, and from classic comedies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to His Girl Friday to intimate character studies like My Dinner with Andre and Twelve Angry Men, these are all films that get in, tell their story, and get out in under a day. So hang out with us for a little while and see what we picked… Maybe you’ll even find a new favorite in our list.
