Famously - though possibly apocryphally - when working together on Marathon Man, legendary actor Laurence Olivier was nonplussed by Dustin Hoffman’s insistence on method acting and running around the block several times so he could be convincingly out of breath and sweaty. “Why not try acting, dear boy,” Olivier apparently said.
Whether or not he actually said it, the great man had a point. Acting, after all, is an internal process, involving deep psychological research, imbuing a character with life that comes from within. External trappings are arguably secondary, if not further down the list.
But there is also something to be said for those actors who are willing to push themselves far further physically than the rest of us might ever be willing to. Piling on the pounds, enduring grim diets and hours of hardcore exercise every day, to achieve that perfectly shredded physique. It’s the kind of grueling approach to acting that has become increasingly common, as Hollywood studios are increasingly willing to shell out thousands on celebrity trainers.
Regardless of where you stand on the practice, it’s undeniably impressive when an actor like Chris Pratt, Christian Bale, Kumail Nanjiani or Emily Blunt appears on screen, toned and jacked and ready for action. In this video, we will be celebrating 15 actors who went the extra mile - or ten - and got super ripped for a role.
And remember - don’t try this at home, kids!
