There’s many reasons why a movie would break the fourth wall. Maybe it’s to make a hilarious joke, maybe it’s to help the audience understand a vital piece of information through voice over, or maybe sometimes the situation calls for it! A fourth wall break in a movie happens when a character somehow references that they are in a film that the audience is watching. I think it’s safe to say that when a movie does this successfully, it’s the most memorable part of the movie!

Think about Deadpool, who’s whole schtick is how he knows he’s in a comic book movie and constantly pokes fun at things like the MCU, the Fox Disney merger, Hugh Jackman and of course, Ryan Reynolds himself. That movie works because of all the fourth wall breaks! But think of movies with inner voice overs like Goodfellas, American Psycho or Fight Club where the lead character is speaking directly to us to explain some of the insane things that are happening. And sometimes the fourth wall break is so unexpected, that it catches you off guard. Have you guys ever seen Funny People? That has one of the most insane fourth wall breaks in movie history that you just have to hear about to believe!
