20 Things You Didn't Know About Marvel Prosthetics
Description
Comic books have always taken advantage of their ability to give their characters the wildest designs, from fancy get ups to fantastical features. No concern has to be given to how they’re suited up or what keeps what in place during the knock down drag out fights that happen within the pages of the comic book. For many years adaptations of comics tried to find ways around those bonkers designs, even going so far as to make fun of the so-called ‘comic accurate’ look when Scott Summers teases Wolverine when asking about the leather uniforms and Summers asks if he would prefer yellow and brown spandex instead. Yes Scott, we would. This is why no one likes you. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone from plucky experiment to lumbering giant that’s either destroying the film industry or saving it depending on your point of view, designers have increasingly been willing to stretch for a recreation of at least one version that has appeared in the comic books. It’s hard enough with costumes but some of the actors have to play characters that don’t even look like human beings. That requires a lot of latex, foam, medical adhesives, paint, and patience from the artists and the stars. The process of turning a mild mannered actor into a feared alien superhero or villain can take upwards of 9 hours to finish. What’s your favorite look translated to the screen?
