Black Panther has emerged victorious as one of the finest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its box office success and critical acclaim has guarantee its status as a landmark cinematic experience and it’s likely it’ll get some attention from the Academy Awards too. Not only is Black Panther a great movie, but it’s an incredible argument for African-American representation in film, especially large blockbusters.

But these accolades and accomplishments are not without their fair share of struggles to overcome. The Black Panther cast: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o and more faced challenges that the other heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn’t have to concern themselves with. For one thing, they had to learn an entire new language, not only speaking it on occasion but utilizing the Wakandan accent at all times. Costumes and makeup was also a struggle. Michael B. Jordan’s makeup in particular was a major undertaking and required regular upkeep. Many of these actors had never been in a film on this scale before and with all the acclaim the film has received, the backlash has been strong as well. There’s also the challenge of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and finding their place as well as standing alone as their own unique storytelling experience. Black Panther was the last Marvel Studios film released before Infinity War and since the cast would be appearing in that film too there was significant pressure to ensure their likability beforehand so they wouldn’t feel out of place.
