Perhaps one of the most inspiring comeback stories in the history of Hollywood, Robert Downey Jr. has had a turbulent career of ups, and downs, before becoming one of the biggest names in show business!
These days, the idea of Downey not getting roles seems like a wild and foreign concept, but there are a number of movies throughout the years that he either lost or turned down! Many of them proved to be career-making roles for other actors, and could have led down a totally different path for him!
I mean, he almost played the part of Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything, which you might recognize as the boombox scene that’s one of the most parodied images ever! Or how about when he was up for Edward Scissorhands! I mean, that movie basically established Johnny Depp’s career as an offbeat leading man, and he’d go on to have a successful collaborative relationship with Tim Burton for years to come.
And on top of that, it was also recently revealed by the Karate Kid himself, Ralph Macchio, that Downey actually auditioned for the part of Daniel LaRusso! For an actor who was already big in the 80s, nothing at that time would have compared to playing THAT role! Just imagine what it would be like today: seeing him in Cobra Kai, working at the car dealership instead of being in the MCU?
So in today’s video, we'll be discussing a number of the 'WHAT IF'S' of Robert Downey Jr.'s career, and roles that he didn't get before becoming Iron Man!
