A sneaky-good Denzel Washington movie just dropped on Netflix: 2004's The Manchurian Candidate, directed by Jonathan Demme of The Silence of the Lambs fame. You've likely heard the name before, probably because the original 1962 film starring Frank Sinatra was a huge hit with a glowing legacy. The Denzel/Demme version swaps the Korean War for the Gulf War, but keeps the central conceit of someone being brainwashed into being an unwitting assassin. Denzel is stellar, as always, but Meryl Streep also gives a very underrated performance as Senator Eleanor Prentiss Shaw.
