Description

Director #RidleyScott returns to helm the sequel to his critical and box office hit. #Gladiator2 will explore the story of Lucius, nephew of Emperor Commodus, originally played by Spencer Treat Clark and #JoaquinPhoenix. Paul Mescal ('Aftersun') takes on the role of adult Lucius, and he's surrounded by an all-star cast of Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Pedro Pascal. Plus, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, and Djimon Hounsou return from the first film.
'Gladiator' was the 2nd highest-grossing film of 2000, raking in half a billion at the worldwide box office, and it won 5 Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Russell Crowe and Best Picture. Development on a Gladiator sequel began in 2001, but hit a road block concerning one key plot-point - the death of Crowe’s character, Maximus.
Early script drafts always involved the revelation that Maximus was the secret father of Lucilla's son Lucius, but Scott, Crowe, and the studio couldn't agree on the best way to involve Maximus in a film that focused on Lucius.
Musician and sometimes screenwriter Nick Cave took a crack at the script around 2006, creating a tale of Maximus being resurrected by the Roman gods as an eternal warrior who must kill Jesus Christ to stop the spread of Christianity. Cursed to live forever, Maximus fights his way through the Crusades, World War II, and Vietnam like an immortal Forrest Gump.
After some insight from actor Chris Hemsworth while he and Crowe worked together on 'Thor: Love and Thunder' (2022), Scott's 'All the Money in the World' (2017) and 'Napoleon' (2023) collaborator David Scarpa was hired to revise the script that would become 'Gladiator 2.'
