Disney and Pixar films are some of the most beloved and iconic in animation history. They’ve had a profound impact on children and adults alike and have quite often, stood the test of time. But those classic stories didn’t just get made on the first attempt. Oh no. There were other versions of the pitch or script before production got under way and they were often quite different from the cuts we’ve seen in theaters.
Starting off with the original Lion King, the entire second act of the movie would have felt much more like Ferris Buller’s Day Off. That’s because that’s exactly what the writers wanted. Instead of being scared into exile, Simba would have been adopted by Scar, who would grow up to be something of a goofball. Sound familiar? Then things would have gotten very dark and intense in the original pitch for Frozen, which saw Elsa as the villainous Snow Queen, which to be fair, is how she was originally written in the fairy tale. Anna and Elsa would also not be siblings.
But speaking of villains, society in Zootopia saw predators as just that. This would ultimately inspire Nick Wilde, the protagonist in this version, to create a secret theme park for all the animal predators to be free and merry away from a society that has persecuted them. From there, we’ll look at the drastically different version of Monsters Inc, which would have followed a human adult protagonist who must face his fears and demons, which have manifested themselves as monsters under his bed.
In a script that would make one think of Christopher Robin meets Goosebumps, Alice and the Mysterious Mr. Carroll was deemed to be too literary for Disney in the 1940s but was to follow Lewis Carroll, author of the beloved novels, and a very real Alice trying to escape reality. From there, we’ll reveal that Woody was basically the villain in the first Toy Story.
Brave is perhaps best known for it’s Scottish setting and cast, but none of that was in the original version. Instead, a generic and nameless looking country was to be used and Merida was to also have a romantic plotline like all princesses before her. Wreck-It Ralph was to include a fourth world which was to be inspired in part by The Sims and Grand Theft Auto. Rapunzel from Tangled was initially written as a millennial living in San Francisco who got transported into the fairy tale life. Last but not least, Toy Story 3 originally did not include the day care but instead, threw all the toys in Andy’s grandma’s attic for a mystery story instead.
