Amsterdam: Movie vs Real Life
Description
The term ‘based on a true story’ has taken a bit of a beating over time. The Coen Brothers even use it as a bit of a cheeky joke in their movie and series Fargo. By now most people know that ‘based on a true story’ is going to take liberties or full on fabrications to turn a true story into a movie story.. Some stories have a built in element where the movie is going to have to fill in the blanks. That is certainly true of David Russell’s new allstar film Amsterdam that is hung loosely around what became The Business Plot were a bunch of elite business men allegedly tried to use a retired General to mobilize angry veterans and have them overthrow the government. How much truth was in that accusation is a thing that has been hotly debated for years, but the Business Plot is merely the background to Russell’s attempt to bring the people in the background of notable photos and fill in what their lives might be in light of the event they have a first row seat to. The surgeon, the lawyer, and the bohemian artist form an unlikely friendship in their frustration with the first world war and go to live a footloose and fancy free existence in Amsterdam until one of them tries to return to his former life and it all ends up getting them involved with a complicated plot to overthrow the government using veterans the way Germany and Italy had at the time.
