With Avatar: Way of Water around the corner, I felt obligated to revisit the massively successful 2009 original directed by the master of science fiction James Cameron. While some believe that the film should stand alone, exploring James Cameron’s Pandora and beyond is something I cannot wait to witness, especially now because it is fresh in my mind. It is set in the mid-22nd century when humans are colonizing a moon called Pandora searching for a rare material known as ‘unobtanium.’ Indigenous to the moon are the Na’vi, a tribe of blue humanoid beings deeply connected with the environment on Pandora. Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, is a paraplegic marine who is recruited to operate a Na’vi-Human Hybrid called – you guessed it - an “AVATAR” after his twin brother meant to carry out the mission passes away. Along with Sam Worthington, the film stars Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy, and Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine. I found that a rewatch of the original gave me a whole new level of excitement for the sequel and many more to come. Are you looking forward to the upcoming sequel?
