From his work on B-movie schlock with Roger Corman, through The Terminator and The Abyss, and onward to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, True Lies and Titanic, writer-director James Cameron has never done things by halves. A pioneer of both practical and computer generated moviemaking, people might have found it obnoxious when he got up on stage at the Oscars and called himself the king of the world, but you can kind of see his point. He’s made two of the most profitable movies of all time, he’s pushed visual effects technology forward in crazy ways. He’s been down to the Mariana Trench in a submarine. The guy’s CV is pretty impressive.

Of course, much of his 21st century legacy is tied up with the planet Pandora, and those big, blue, somewhat goofy Na’vi. Not everybody is convinced in Cameron’s decision to dedicate seemingly the rest of his life to exploring his bizarre sci-fi Fern Gully meets Dances With Wolves meets Star Wars mashup, but based on his previous work, we’re willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Like it or not, we’re getting four sequels.

With that in mind, it seems like a good time to look back at that first 2009 movie, marvel at the advanced performance capture techniques that brought it to life, raise an eyebrow at the lengthy development process, and maybe have a giggle at how funny the actors look without a layer of computer graphics over their ping pong balls.

Yes, this is Avatar before CGI. Strap in.
