There have been many actors to take on the role of DC’s iconic villain, The Joker, over the years. Some have been iconic and great, including the two actors to win Oscars playing the Clown Prince. Joaquin Phoenix and the late Heath Ledger both played very different Jokers. The same can be applied to Jared Leto, only his Joker is, well, memorable for different reasons. But through all of that, the debate has raged: which is the best Joker? While everyone is sure to have an opinion on this, we have our own nominee.
While we’ve never seen him play the Joker, we think Mark Hamill’s many performances as Mr. J in animated series, film and video games make him the best Joker around. He’s been playing the villainous character for some time now, ever since Batman The Animated Series debuted in 1992. From there, he’s gone on to play the character numerous times, building up a lot of experience in portraying such an unhinged character.
Seeing as Hamill lends only his voice to the role, he has to really emote what the Joker is thinking and feeling and that carries into the signature laugh that the Joker is known for. Hamill is able to play the Joker like a musician plays an instrument. Not only that, but the Joker that Hamill is known for is arguably the most comic book accurate adaptation of the character to boot. While many actors have taken their own spin on the Clown Prince, from discussing mental illness to a man who just wants to watch the world burn, to “damaged”, Hamill’s feels more in line with what’d you find on the comic book page: a sinister and out of control villain who laughs at this own antics and jokes.
