Back in 1986, Hollywood legend Tom Cruise, director Ridley Scott, a load of dry ice and a song by Berlin revolutionized the way we watch cocky young men fly F-14 fighter planes really fast in the sky. Produced by the legendary Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie was a monster hit, bringing in $356 million against a budget of only $15 million - peanuts in today’s money.

Now, 36 years later, in the manner of such legacy sequels as Blade Runner: 2049, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Halloween and the like, Mr Cruise is back, with a script by his Mission Impossible Rogue Nation and MI Fallout co-conspirator Christopher McQuarrie, in Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited high-flying second installment in the story of Pete Mitchell, the best pilot in the known universe (better than Luke Skywalker? We don’t know! They’re probably not even really comparable!).

Co-starring Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer, and directed by Joseph Kosinski - Oblivion, Tron: Legacy - the picture will, as is now tradition for any big release starring this particular 100-megawatt movie star, feature state-of-the-art realistic action sequences involving F-18 Super Hornet fighter jets, intense G-forces, barrel rolls and all sorts of aerial nonsense.
