Blonde: Real Life vs. Movie
Description
The Big Question Is - Do Gentlemen Prefer ‘Blonde’?
After a brief theatrical run, the controversial new movie Blonde, directed by Andrew Dominik and based on the best-selling Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel by Joyce Carol Oates, has arrived on Netflix. It’s the first NC-17 movie to hit streaming, and there’s a reason for that rating - the movie is an uncompromising, harrowing, often upsetting depiction of the tragic and tumultuous life of Marilyn Monroe, one of the biggest and most iconic stars of classic Hollywood. It’s nearly three hours long, uses a variety of striking and often jarring visual techniques, and content warning - a lot of what happens in the movie is not for the faint of heart. Viewer discretion is advised, sensitive moviegoers may find it disturbing and unpalatable.
The movie isn’t a straight biopic, just as the novel isn’t a straight work of biography - both offer a fictionalised portrayal of the bombshell star, using aspects of her real life and inventing others to create a stark and impressionistic portrait. Both book and film have proved controversial, and while everyone is saying Anna de Armas’ performance is incredible - and they’re right - a lot of people are also concerned that the movie is a bit of a misery-fest.
And with these fictionalised re-tellings of real people, we run into a problem - what’s real life and what’s not? Well, don’t fear! We at ScreenRant are here to separate the fact from the fiction. So join Screen Rant, and let’s hike up our skirts and see if we can discover the human being beneath the icon.
