Costumes That Are More Famous Than The Character

Everyone has their own favorite cinema stars and the iconic outfits that they wear. Films like Star Wars with Princess Leia’s famed white dress, Captain Jack Sparrow’s pirate hat from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl or Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Spider-Man, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange from the Marvel Cinematic Universe all feature some of the greatest designed clothing items Hollywood has ever produced. That being said, these roles are much more iconic than the threads that they happen to wear.

Then there are roles like Leeloo from The Fifth Element, Halle Berry from Catwoman, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad, Natalie Portman from Black Swan, Ryan Gosling from Drive, Jeff Goldblum from Jurassic Park, Sauron from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, Mary McFly from Back to the Future, Tom Hanks from Forrest Gump, and Uma Thurman in both Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. All of these roles have outfits bigger than the people inside of them. That goes to show you that a quality costume designer can be worth more than an actor or a screenwriter in the right project. These superheroes, kung fu assassins, scientists, dark lords of evil, supervillains, heist drivers, time travelers and whatever you would call Forrest Gump are all improved drastically by the outfits they happen to be wearing in the scene.
