It’s coming for us! Creeping underfoot like a massive sandworm through the dunes, Dennis Villenueve’s feature film adaptation of Dune is getting ready to burst into theaters and spray Spice every which way. We may still have a couple of weeks before that happens, but how about we sit back and watch some worm sign by gathering up and recounting some behind the scenes production details and stories from the film’s long shoot and COVID-enhanced post-production process…
We’ll be talking a little about the history of getting Dune made and Dennis Villenueve’s apprehensions about how this version would turn out, along with how star Timothee Chalamet not only reassured him that he had made the right call but also made him cry on set… And not just over how hard it was to deal with that hair. We will also be talking up a storm about how Hans Zimmer invented brand new musical instruments in his score and used vocal performances to bring the underlying themes of the original novel into the music; how the production design team used Villenueve’s insistence on real sets and location to build massive, opulent palaces and fill them up with incredible and varied costumes and art; and how they shot in the triple-digit temperatures of the open desert with a bare minimum of CGI. We’ve also got some on set stories about Stelan Skarsgard, the process of transforming him into the villainous Baron Harkonnen, and how he really slipped under the surface of that nasty, oily pool of water in all of that makeup to get Villenueve the shots that he needed.
