Matt Reeves' "The Batman" walks a fine line. It's arguably the darkest and grittiest Batman movie yet, but it's also based on some pretty garish comic book characters, like The Penguin and The Riddler. This means Reeves and his cast had to balance a more "realistic" portrayal of the adventures of the Caped Crusader with a rich history of over-the-top villains and cartoon-y subject matter.
