Description

Encanto! The story of the family Madrigal, their unique powers, and the journey to alleviate generation trauma while belting out some rad Lin Manuel Miranda songs is a certified cultural goliath… so of course, I gotta tell you about a whole bunch of details only fans noticed. I mean, like, unless you hated it and are just, like, SUPER perceptive. ANYWAY, the list! Of course, if we’re going to talk about the latest Lin Manuel Miranda sensation, we have GOT to talk about Bruno. Bruno is of course the self-exiled black sheep of the family whose power is to see into the future – something that a lot of people don’t appreciate, despite many of his predictions being preventable.

The 1967 Colombian novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the story of a multi-generational family and the founding of a utopian town called Macondot. This classic work is one of the most important pieces of literature in the history of, well, literature – so it’s no surprise that it was an influence on Encanto. This goes beyond the obvious things like how Abuela essentially creates a new, utopian town, the presence of bizarre powers and supernatural goings-on, or the emphasis on family and the circular nature of humanity. One detail you wouldn’t necessarily expect is the inclusion of these butterflies. In the novel the character of Mauricio Babilonia is followed by yellow butterflies, which are seen as a symbol of love and hope. And as long as we’re talkin’ butterflies, there are twelve on the threshold at the end, signifying the number of family members.
