Avatar: The Last Airbender had one of the greatest worlds ever put into an animated series. Sorry Bikini Bottom, you’ve got nothing on Ba Sing Se! The show went in depth on how four societies framed around magical element bending powers shaped the people’s infrastructure, architecture, technology, philosophy, warfare and art. Perhaps no show aimed at children has ever tried so hard to teach kids about how the world is made up of so many different people with different ideas and beliefs. As incredible a feat as Avatar and the bending world it created was, what’s perhaps even more incredible is that the franchise managed to do it again.
The Legend of Korra takes place a full generation after Aang’s time and the world is shown to be a very very different place. All of the building blocks from the first series are still there, they’ve just been rearranged around a drastically changed world that is no longer under the thumb of constant warfare. We get to see how technology, philosophy, bending and even the world itself have changed despite several decades being all that separate the two series. The hard won peace from the original series served as a backdrop for all the conflicts Korra had to suffer through.
Ultimately, these changes teach us about the ever-shifting nature of the world and how the more things change the more they often stay the same. So let’s dive right into how everything changed between Avatar and Legend of Korra!
