After Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Warner Bros DCEU made its first DC Comics adaptation not to feature Bruce Wayne’s Dark Knight or Clark Kent’s the last Son of Krypton. Before Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazaam - the movie was Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jared Leto as The Joker. First created by Robert Kanigher, Ross Andru and John Ostrander, and appearing in The Brave and the Bold, these supervillains are sent on missions by the US government, like an evil Dirty Dozen with superpowers.

Now in 2021, a new set of DC villains are heading into battle - The Suicide Squad will be directed by James Gunn, of the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Idris Elba, Sylvester Stallone, John Cena and Peter Capaldi will join the cast as Bloodsport, King Shark, Peacemaker and The Thinker, with Kinnaman and Robbie reprising their roles. But why the soft reboot? Why not a sequel as with other entries in the DC Extended Universe shared universe continuity?
