Everything We Know About the Future of Star Wars
Description
On this IMDbrief, we break down how Vader, Ahsoka, Kenobi, and all of our new Jedi pals will fit into an expanding Star Wars galaxy of new movies and shows. So far, twelve new titles have been announced in the space-based franchise that Disney purchased in 2012. First, “The Mandalorian” will get a Season 3, plus three spin-offs from the fan-favorite series that launched Baby Yoda, a.k.a. Grogu. The spin-offs are “Ahsoka” starring Rosario Dawson as Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano created by Dave Filoni for his “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated series, “Rangers of the New Republic” which is another Filoni and Jon Favreau project that follows former Rebels trying to maintain order in a post-Empire galaxy, and “The Book of Boba Fett” with Temeura Morrison and Ming-Na Wen. Filoni will also launch an animated spin-off series from “Clone Wars” about the genetically-modified Clone Force 99, a.k.a. “The Bad Batch.” The “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series from director Deborah Chow and starring Ewan McGregor was previously announced, but Hayden Christensen has been added to the cast to reprise his prequel role of Darth Vader. The ‘Rogue One’ prequel “Andor” was also previously announced with Diego Luna starring as Cassian Andor, but a first look was released with show runner Tony Gliroy, plus an all-star cast of Stellan Skarsgard, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, and Denise Gough. There’s also a “Lando” series from “Dear White People” creator/director Justin Simien, but it has not yet been announced whether Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams will return to the Lando Calrissian role, or perhaps both! ‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins will helm a ‘Rogue Squadron’ film for Christmas 2023 about the bravest of X-Wing aviators. “Russian Doll” creator Leslye Headland will run a new series about the High Republic era 200 years before ‘Episode I - The Phantom Menace’ called “The Acolyte.” There’s also a series of ten short films in Japanese anime style animation called “Star Wars: Visions” and a C-3P0 and R2-D2 film that mixes animation and visual effects called ‘A Droid Story.’ Lastly, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Jojo Rabbit’ director Taika Waititi will direct an untitled film that just might involve the Dawn of the Jedi.
