With one quick flash of him in the trailer, fans everywhere were excited to see just what Robert Pattinson was going to bring to Netflix’s The King. But no one could have expected what we got.
In The King, Pattinson plays the Dauphin of France, but unlike any Dauphin you’ve seen before. With his long blonde wig and stylish costumes, Pattinson enters the movie about an hour in and totally shakes up the entire thing. But the best, and possibly the worst thing about his Dauphin, is the accent. Pattinson has landed on an absolutely insane interpretation of a French accent that has taken the internet by storm. Sounding like a mix of the audacious Pepe Le Pew and the violent chef from The Little Mermaid, with a bit of Monty Python thrown in there for good luck, Pattinson’s character doesn’t only come from a different country than the rest of the characters, but an entirely different universe. And he’s not alone! Sometimes actors come out with an accent so strange and unbelievable that we have to wonder just how they made it passed the director into the final cut. Like Dick Van Dyke doing his impression of a Cockney accent in Mary Poppins, or Kevin Costner giving as little effort as possible to a British accent to play Robin Hood. There is also Anne Hathaway in One Day, James Van Der Beek doing a poor man’s Reba in Varsity Blues, the ever endearing Keanu Reeves struggling through Dracula, or the insanity of Nicholas Cage.
