Description

There were some great 2018 movies that critics were totally wrong about. In fact, critics haven’t had a great run as of late. Some of these sort of fit the bill - you expect critics to hate a movie like The Meg - but that’s partially because they didn’t get it. The Meg (Jason Statham) was a fun action romp - not meant to be too deep (no pun intended) but rather just a megalodon swimming around and terrorizing people. The Meg scared up audiences in a good way, and had a pretty solid box office return.

Another film that critics didn’t get was Venom. Venom wasn’t as intricate as an MCU film, but was still a lot of fun. Tom Hardy turned in a solid performance as Eddie Brock, the reporter turned symbiote co-host as they romp their way through San Francisco. Critics hated Venom, but fans loved it. The film was the polar opposite of The Last Jedi - fans hated The Last Jedi but critics loved it. The film blew away estimates as comic fans flocked to theaters opening weekend to check out Venom.

The Nun is never the type of movie that scores well with critics. Horror movies score poorly with critics, but The Nun knew its Conjuring audience well and the theaters were packed with fans that eagerly awaited the next jump scare. Critics hated The Nun - but it did so well at the box office that a Nun sequel is already in the works. Critics aren’t always right.
