The long decades spanning prelude has finally ended, the threshold has been crossed, and the war we all knew was coming has crossed the point of no return when Aemon’s Vhagar took a bite out of Arrax and Rheanyra’s second born son. She may have been reluctant to go to war to defend her birthright against her half brother before, but she isn’t now. At least not according to that look she sends straight down the barrel of the camera at the end of season 1 of House of the Dragon that covers the last half of Fire and Blood, the Dance of Dragons. It was a passing reference in Game of Thrones which, just like the Clone Wars that was name dropped by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, it promised a really cool war that we’re not going to get to see. At least not without the magic of the prequel. The first season has been all set up starting with what would ultimately be the thing that tears the family and land of Westeros apart, Viserys appointing his daughter Rheanyra as his heir in a challenge of tradition that says that women can’t be the head monarch in charge of Westeros. But there have only been five Targaryan kings, so why not mix it up? After we found out that the Small Council was never going to accept a queen in charge, the path to war was locked in place.
