Description

Improvisation is an incredible storytelling tool when, like in the MCU, you have actors who have inhabited these characters for years and know them inside and out, and it can also give really natural, grounded performances that most directors are looking for. Improv isn’t always funny, and there are several scenes that span from Spider-Man: No Way Home to 2008’s Iron Man that use improvisation in serious and hilarious ways.

Yep, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of improvised moments, which might surprise you, as a film set where nearly every shot features VFX doesn’t seem like the best place to keep things loose. But Marvel filmmakers know that the things that sets their films apart are the characters, relationships, and stories, not when things go boom boom, so they intentionally make space for off-the-cuff inspiration, even on sets like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

And the ever-expanding Marvel TV team (all the stuff on Disney+) also doesn’t shy away from going off-script, with Loki, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye all making appearances on this list (but don’t miss entries from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Doctor Strange, and more).
