Description
Letitia Wright sits down with IMDb to discuss how her working relationship with filmmaker Steve McQueen developed on the set of his new miniseries "Small Axe" (2020). Wright, who may be best known for playing Shuri in Marvel mega-hit, 'Black Panther' (2018), portrays the real-world British Black Panther Movement leader, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, in the first of McQueen’s five films in the "Small Axe" miniseries, 'Mangrove' which tells the story of The Mangrove Nine, their protest over the police raiding a Caribbean restaurant in Notting Hill, London, and their ensuing trials. McQueen, whose 2013 film ’12 Years a Slave' took home Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o) at the 86th Academy Awards, directs, produces, and co-writes all five films in the "Small Axe" miniseries, an exploration of the real-life experiences of London’s West Indian community between 1969 and 1982. 'Mangrove' also stars Shaun Parkes as Frank Crichlow, the owner of the Mangrove, Malachi Kirby as racial justice campaigner Darcus Howe, Jack Lowden as barrister Ian Macdonald, and Sam Spruell as Police Constable Frank Pulley. After a world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 25, 2020, 'Mangrove' debuts on BBC One in the UK on November 15, and in the US on Prime Video on November 20.
