The Marvel Cinematic Universe is all set to usher in Phase 4. Impeded by the Covid-19 pandemic, the MCU is slated to debut another leg of its cosmic realm in 2021. The Eternals, as they were created by Jack Kirby in 1976, will get their own franchise and live-action adaptation in Marvel's next phase. Marvel has already expanded its universe to include the alien Kree and Skrull clans and continues its tradition of picking characters from comic book obscurity to enter into the cinematic world. The Eternals are the evolutionary offshoots of the Celestials, who visited the earth millennia ago and carried out experiments on proto-human subjects. They were created as keepers of peace, but like any well intended genetic experiment, the creation of the Eternals too had unwanted side-effects: namely the creation of the Deviants. The Deviants are known in comic book lore as enemies of mankind and are traditional arch rivals of their Eternal cousins, but the MCU will likely put forth a newer, more nuanced version of this narrative. The Eternals vs. Deviants conflict will be the centrestage of the film, but it wouldn't be surprising to see new perspectives added to this premise to spruce up the film's dramatic potential. Marvel is also roping in A-Listers like Angelina Jolie, Kit Harrington, Salma Hayek and Richard Madden to helm key roles as the Eternals, while the cast playing the Deviants remains largely unknown. Unique superheroes, multi-potentiate profiles and molecular manipulation are the hallmark powers of The Eternals' playbook, upping the ante of the film's visual offerings.
