The Mortal Kombat franchise is known for its gruesome signature moves and equal parts gorey and comical fatalities. With clones, mutants, and demi-gods it’s easy to think weaponry isn’t a big deal in the realm shattering tournament of all tournaments. But when it comes to sordid legacy, realm based backstories, character origin, and character design weapons carry a ton of weight in Mortal Kombat. From the wrath of Shao Kahn to the mouth of Mileena, let’s do a deep dive on the most iconic weapons over these last 28 years.
I know Scorpion and Sub-Zero are heavy on our mind with the latest film but you can be sure the kunai and ice daggers aren’t the only thing to look out for. We’ve got ice, we’ve got arms, we’ve got staffs and hats and landscaping... we’ve got ropes… or maybe it’s a chain? That pesky 8-bit quality. We’ll simply never know.
Be it the cybernetic enhancements of Jax, the happy (eh?) accidents of cloning for Mileena, or the oh my god, he on X Games mode energy of Raiden’s staff, there’s plenty of options to make you look cool. Or, you know, to shame you in front of your peers down at the local arcade. I was not the first to trust too hard in Kung Lao’s hat when playing against someone who had main’d Kitana for years and I will not be the last… That Edenian defense and melee combo is just… too good.
Am I crying? No. You are. Please enjoy our list.
