Computer generated imagery, from the virtual reality of Tron, the first Pixar short with the baby and the tin toy, and the T-1000 appearing from the floor, through The Matrix bullet time scenes and Avatar’s battle for Pandora, has enabled filmmakers to take audiences where no cinemagoer has gone before. Of course, the history of Hollywood stretches back way further than the pixel dreams of Industrial Light and Magic - from the very first silent pictures, silver screen technicians have been finding ways to create illusions and trick normies into thinking trains were going to come flying out of the screen into the theatre.
But just as magical - perhaps more impressive - than huge CG battle scenes are the places where the makers of films didn’t have to use the computer. The Paramount mountains, the vast deserts, the icy tundras, the Jedi steps of Skellig Michael. The likes of Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, George Lucas, George Miller, Cary Fukunaga, Chris Columbus, the Russo Brothers, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, all the best directors, know when to set aside the mouse and keyboard and let geography do the talking. We could probably do a whole series of videos about New Zealand alone.
So in this exciting list, Screen Rant is celebrating the real life film sets - the places the scouts found where they couldn’t believe their eyes. The movie locations that aren’t CGI. Real places! Yeah, it’s crazy to think about, but they actually exist.
