Deleted scenes are all over the place. Every DVD comes with a section for them and the internet is awash with articles and videos promising to explain how one scene would have changed everything. Why are we all so obsessed with deleted scenes?

It started decades ago, when directors became celebrities and were given more artistic freedom. But, not enough to have the final say about the final cut. The studios still had enough sway (and enough money) to dictate the final shape of the movie. A lot of stuff was left on the cutting room floor, and all the fans of these famous directors wanted to see the forgotten footage. And so, the director’s cut and the deleted scene were born.

As technology has developed, so has our obsession with deleted scenes and everything behind-the-scenes. Today we’re going to be dissecting the enduring appeal the deleted scenes and our collective obsession with access.
