Generations of children have been wishing upon stars thanks to the story of Pinocchio. From the original 1883 book, to the 1940 cartoon and the 2022 Disney live-action remake starring Tom Hanks, the world has loved the characters in this story. Now, from the mind of Gulliermo Del Toro, there’s a new adaptation that tells a darker version of the tale. It’s emotional, beautiful, and haunting in all the best ways, but it’s very different from Disney’s original animation.

The animation type is different, as are the songs written for the film. The setting in Del Toro’s film is similar, but more specific than Disney’s, and Del Toro’s film mentions a time-frame that was never listed in Disney’s Pinocchio. Gepetto also has a son, Carlo, who we never saw or heard of in the Disney film, and two pets: Figaro and Cleo. Disney’s Blue Fairy is very different from Del Toro’s wood sprites that represent life and death, and we can’t forget how different Pinocchio and Cricket are in Del Toro’s version. Honest John and Stromboli are combined into one antagonist, Count Volpe, and his evil sidekick is changed from a cat to a monkey. The Youth Camp is very different from Pleasure Isle, as is Pinocchio’s youth camp friend, Candlewick, from his Disney pal, Lampwick. The ending makes the story entirely different, as well, in the way that Pinocchio and Gepetto escape the whale and in how Del Toro defines a ‘real boy.’
