Disney could never have known that Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl would spawn not just one sequel, but an entire franchise, including Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales (or Salazar’s Revenge, depending on where you live). Nobody could have predicted that Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow would become not just a key figure in the series, but an iconic and eternal Halloween costume. Gore Verbinski couldn’t have realised that basing a movie on a famous ride at Disneyland would be anything less than a disaster.

But billions of dollars, rum, Kraken, exploding ships, skeleton pirates and parlays later, the series is riding high. Well, it’s not sinking anyway. Margot Robbie was supposed to be making a new one with Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) and that’s not happening anymore. But regardless, the Pirates series still has some cultural cache left. It’s the 15th highest grossing movie series of all time, after all, putting it up there with Star Wars, Harry Potter and Police Academy (no, not really, we’re lying about that bit).

And throughout five movies, there are all sorts of details, gags, easter eggs, behind the scenes secrets, continuity references, jokes and other things you missed. Which is where we come in.
