The latest starring vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot is here and with that of course comes all the stuff you may have missed while watching this $200 million Netflix behemoth. For example, Cleopatra’s eggs are completely fabricated for the film. The idea, that Antony had them made as gifts for his Egyptian girlfriend, is something writer director Rawson Marshall Thurber came up with to give his trio of humorous Hollywood elites something to chase through studios for. However, the idea of the eggs is technically based on real world history. You’ve probably heard of the Faberge egg, which was a jeweled, uh, egg made by the Russian jewelry firm House of Faberge between the years 1885 and 1917. Fifty two eggs, out of a total of sixty-nine, were created for the wives and mothers of Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II. Some of them are still missing to this day, leaving them open as perfect plot devices. And heck, they’ve been used in other movies: Ocean’s Twelve and Octopussy, to name two of the most famous examples.

Additionally, there are a ton of sets and green screen setups used throughout the film. The production started in 2019 and was shuttered temporarily in 2020 ‘cause, you know, the big bad no good times. And if you watch closely, you can tell from the lack of crowds and hefty use of two or three person scenes that any time they could the production mitigated risk — and the almost absurd use of sets and green screen to get across the world-spanning adventure certainly fits in with that.
