Riffing! For some directors, it’s their worst nightmare. Everything has been meticulously planned, the scripts have been memorized, you’ve spent hours and hours getting the lighting exactly right, and then the actors start just making stuff up.
And in the modern era, where the likes of Disney, Marvel and the other mega studios make their blockbuster product according to very strict templates, you would think that the desire to riff would be squashed as much as possible. But interestingly, that’s not always the case. Maybe when you take the likes of Taika Waititi, Jon Watts and Marc Webb out of the indie scene and put them to work making huge four-quadrant tentpoles, they want to bring a bit of that indie energy with them.
Whatever the reason, it’s important that even with all the CGI doohickeys flying around, actors still have some space to develop their characters and have some fun.
One particular superhero character whose actors have enjoyed the opportunity to improvise is everyone’s favorite wall-crawling web-slinger, Spider-Man. And why not? The character is famous for quipping his way around New York City as he bashes goons left, right and center. You’d want your actors, your Tom Hollands, your Tobey Maguires and your Andrew Garfields to have that same quippy energy.
In this video, we’re going to look at a bunch of scenes from across various Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond, and discover which moments benefited from actorly improvisation.
