When it comes to movie making we often comment on the visual effects and the extraordinary work that the VFX teams put in to bring the director’s vision to life. But there is one big department in the industry that often goes relatively unnoticed and that is the sound department. This is surprising given how important good sound effects are to a movie - whether it be the sound of a lightsaber humming or a dinosaur roaring - these sound effects add to the realism and immerse us even further in the cinematic experience. But when it comes to creating these sounds (especially ones that have never been heard before or are completely fictional) challenges arise, and the sound department often has to get inventive in order to bring the sound effect to life. Like, really creative!
In this video we are going to take a look at some of the most iconic sounds in cinema and the bizarre true noises behind them. From the use of cats purring mixed with beetles flying, old farm equipment being used for classic sci-fi vehicles, animals doing a bunch of funny things to get a sound effect, bizarre instruments behind some of the most ominous effects of all time, flour and floor cleaner being used to create one of the most unique sounds in cinema, a wet leather handbag being used for a particular extra-terrestrial, to sucking up canned dog food being used multiple times in movies. These are the bizarre true sounds behind the most iconic movie sound effects of all time.
