Super soldiers! They’ve got something of a colorful history in the MCU. After all, not everybody is going to end up being as successful as Steve Rogers - and if you know your comics, not even Captain America himself always set the most shining example.
From Rogers to Red Skull to Isaiah Bradley to US Agent - not to mention Anti-Cap, Patriot and American Kaiju - there have been many attempts to perfect the super soldier serum and create the ultimate warrior. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel’s new Disney+ streaming show - Netflix? Never heard of them - is leaping into this complex and fraught mythos two-footed with its portrayal of the Flag Smashers. Youthful renegades with enhanced strength and stamina, they’re a mirror image of the likes of Bucky Barnes and - yes - Steve Rogers.
But speaking of mirror images - let’s talk about John Walker. Played by Wyatt Russell, he has been groomed as a successor to Cap, a government-approved bundle of enthusiasm, patriotism, combat readiness and washboard abs. And he seems like a friendly enough guy, though Sam Wilson and Bucky are understandably suspicious of his motives - and his possession of Steve’s iconic shield.
In this video, we’re going to explore what exactly is up with the new Captain America - and whether John Walker could end up going down the super soldier route. How could it happen? Why could it happen? Is it a good idea?
Spoiler alert - it’s complicated.
