The Peripheral: ENDING And POST-CREDIT Scene Explained

The folks behind HBO’s Westworld have taken on cyberpunk pioneer William Gibson in an adaptation of his novel The Peripheral. With equal parts of Gibson’s conspiracies within conspiracies and the showrunner’s demonstrated ability to blend timelines this cyberpunk time travel thriller is bound to be a complex puzzle with many moving parts. Lots and lots. Just sorting out a “when” for the series is a daunting task. Our hero Flynne comes from 2034 where her brother was part of an experimental haptic implant program that connected him and his unit together. He’s also a veteran of a recent civil conflict that isn’t all that defined except it involved fighting Texans who hate dogs. Their lives are made complicated by people from 2100 who live in a world post-apocalyptic event they call the Jackpot. They can communicate with the past which they’ve been doing to test technologies like the haptic implants as well as ways in which the Jackpot happened. The only problem is that when they do that they create a new timeline they call a Stub and Flynne lives in a Stub which is why only ten years into our future so much is different, because the Research Institute and the Klepts re: Kleptocracy that control the future have been mucking about in her time for a while. Just to make sure things are extra complicated there’s the Neoprims who want to teardown the society run by the Research Institute, Klepts, and Metro and was hoping to use Flynne’s brother Burton and his haptics to steal ‘The Library’ of R.I.’s wrong doings, but it ended up being written as DNA in Flynne when she took his place.
