The Secrets Behind Batman Villain's Prosthetics
Description
So how on earth can any villain look as ridiculous as a man who dresses up as a bat; massive ears and all? Well that’s by creating a rogues gallery that dons costumes that are just as outlandish. The villains of Gotham City all have insane design aspects. Take Killer Croc who is a man that overtime started developing scales and the physicality of a crocodile, or Man Bat who is like the bizarro version of Batman by being a bat in proportion rather than through costume.
Understandably, taking these illustrations from page to screen can cause some interesting design challenges. Some of the characters like Two Face in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight used Computer Generated Imagery to bring life to the obscene design, while other characters like Scarecrow just rely on some well designed costume pieces to cause terror. That right, Dr. Jonathon Crane was wearing a potato sack over his head well before Jason Vorhees did.
Our first look at the upcoming Robert Pattinson Batman film directed by Matt Reeves had fans scratching their heads over who this mysterious actor that had plenty of screen time during the teaser is. Turns out to be none other than The Gentleman himself, Colin Farrell. Dawning an insane amount of prosthetics, Colin is virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, but that’s certainly not the first time a Batman villain has worn prosthetics.
Prosthetics have been an extraordinarily effective tool in bringing the comics to life since the Adam West days of Batman. Today we will be having a look at just how these prosthetics were designed, how they were applied and the choices done my the production crews to adapt the designs to their specific universes.
