Description

Once upon a time zombies were that novelty monster. While zombies are part of Vudon lore out of Haiti, the modern zombie is the whole cloth creation of horror master George Romero who created the landmark Night of the Living Dead. If there’s any indication that he didn’t know that he would be starting a cultural phenomenon, it’s that even the movie itself isn’t protected intellectual property. The filmmaker never put a copyright symbol on the prints which was required for copyright at the time. Since then Romero style zombies have become a cult favorite monster that hit the mainstream when Robert Kirkman’s comic book about a group of Survivors during a zombie apocalypse became an unexpected phenomenon on AMC, the network that had previously shook things up with their show Mad Men. Like Mad Men, The Walking Dead helped change the landscape of television. Part of the new Golden Age and an early entry into what became known as prestige television. That’s a fancy way of saying spending feature film money on a TV series when TV had been the red headed step child of entertainment that at the time was being given over to reality tv that was cheaper to produce. After 11 seasons we finally say a goodbye to the series, but only kinda as one spin off has already run its episodes and three more wait in the wings to join Fear the Walking Dead and the Walking Dead Universe.
